BVN stands for Bank Verification Number, it is a biometric identification number in the database of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The number assist the Central Bank of Nigeria to reduce fraudulent activities in the banking system in Nigeria. Every account holder is required to have a Bank Verification Number which is linked to all their bank accounts.

The following information are stored in the Bank Verification Number : photograph, fingerprint and other relevant information (For example, name, age, date of birth and so on) in the database of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
On completion of the registration for the Bank Verification Number, you are required to link it to all your accounts.
To check your BVN verification code on your mobile phone you are required to  dial a specified USSD code. The code does not require Internet connectivity but requires a minimum of 20 Naira on your phone.

Your BVN is an 11 digit number and it acts as your universal ID in all commercial banks in Nigeria. The Central Bank of Nigeria implemented this Biometric Identification System within the industry to curb illegal banking.
