MultiChoice Unveils Free DStv Sports Upgrade and Premium Perks in Major Package Overhaul

MultiChoice has introduced a new round of subscriber incentives across its DStv network, offering temporary free upgrades to higher-tier content following a major restructuring of its subscription plans.

The initiative begins in South Africa, where eligible DStv Select subscribers gain seven days of complimentary access to the newly launched DStv Sports package starting September 29, 2026. While MultiChoice has not extended these specific perks to Nigerian subscribers yet, the move highlights how the pay-TV giant is overhauling content bundles to improve subscriber retention against rising streaming competition across Africa.

DStv Tests 7-Day Free Package Upgrades for Subscribers

According to MultiChoice, the seven-day sports preview follows a broader package redesign launched on September 17. Under the promotional trial, qualifying DStv Select subscribers who pay their monthly subscription in full and on time will automatically receive seven days of DStv Sports access at the start of their billing cycle.

Subscribers do not need to register or apply manually; accounts automatically revert to the standard Select tier after seven days. MultiChoice CEO Willington Ngwepe noted that this restructuring represents the first phase of broader updates designed to deliver higher value to viewers, adding that similar upgrades may roll out to additional DStv tiers before the end of 2026.

MultiChoice Launches Dedicated 17-Channel DStv Sports Bouquet

The newly introduced DStv Sports bouquet is MultiChoice’s first standalone sports-focused plan, featuring a 17-channel lineup tailored for live sports fans. The tier includes selected matches from the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and Betway Premiership, as well as live coverage of cricket, UFC, WWE, and domestic rugby fixtures.

This sports standalone option was launched alongside a new dedicated Movies & Series package as part of DStv’s largest product overhaul in nearly 15 years. Under the South African migration strategy reported by MyBroadband:

  • DStv Access users moved to the Starter tier.

  • DStv Family subscribers migrated to Select.

  • DStv Compact subscribers transitioned to the new Sports package.

  • EasyView remained unchanged as an entry-level tier.

DStv Compact Plus Subscribers Upgraded to Premium Tier

In one of the most significant changes, existing DStv Compact Plus subscribers are being automatically upgraded to full DStv Premium content without paying full Premium rates. MultiChoice has retired (or "grandfathered") the Compact Plus tier for new sign-ups, but existing users keep their lower rates on a month-to-month basis.

Streaming-only Compact Plus users continue paying R549 per month, while decoder subscribers pay R649 monthly—both receiving full Premium access. By comparison, standard DStv Premium costs R799 for streaming users and R979 for decoder accounts in South Africa.

While these pricing shifts, package migrations, and free sports access perks remain exclusive to the South African market for now, MultiChoice has not yet announced when similar promotional strategies will roll out to DStv subscribers in Nigeria.
