MTN Expands Home Broadband in Nigeria and Ghana via Fibre & FWA

MTN Group is accelerating its expansion into home broadband across West Africa, identifying Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) as primary growth engines in Nigeria and Ghana.

The strategy took center stage during MTN Group’s H1 2026 interim results presentation. Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita highlighted that Nigeria is seeing increased capital deployment into home connectivity, while Ghana is positioned for a major three-year broadband expansion.

Capex Boost Targets Nigeria’s Home Broadband Demand

MTN raised its capital expenditure intensity in Nigeria to over 20% in the first half of 2026. This capital injection funded mobile network expansion alongside a targeted push into residential broadband.

"The capex intensity in Nigeria was over 20% as we pursued growth in our mobile network, and pushing hard on the significant home opportunity... pushing both a combination of fixed wireless access as well as fibre." — Ralph Mupita, CEO, MTN Group

Data Consumption Surges Across West African Markets

The group's focus on home broadband aligns with shifting revenue patterns. Group data revenue grew 29.2% YoY in H1 2026, contributing nearly 50% of total service revenue. Total network data traffic reached 14,338 petabytes.

Market Avg. Monthly Data Usage per User Key Network Focus
Nigeria ~14.8 GB FWA Expansion & Fibre Infrastructure
Ghana ~19.0 GB Fibre Expansion & Upcoming 5G Spectrum

Ghana Prepares for a Three-Year Connectivity Pivot

Ghana remains one of MTN’s top-performing operations, reporting a 32% service revenue increase and an EBITDA margin of 61.8%. MTN plans to leverage this momentum by pivoting from mobile-first coverage to residential fixed services over the next three years.

To support this transition, MTN is expanding its Ghanaian fibre footprint while acquiring low-band and mid-band 5G spectrum to scale its FWA offerings.

Satellite Partnerships, AI, and Device Affordability

Beyond fixed broadband, MTN is evaluating several emerging technology vectors for H2 2026 and beyond:

  • LEO Satellites: Tailoring low-Earth orbit satellite partnerships on a market-by-market basis to expand coverage.

  • Artificial Intelligence: Tracking AI model deployment costs and operational integration.

  • Device Costs: Addressing rising chipset prices and smartphone affordability through targeted device financing programs.
